SARATOGA SPRINGS – It takes a while – years, maybe decades – for a moment of dance to become iconic. For example, Martha Graham dressed in a stretchy tube of fabric for “Lamentation”; the “Wade in the Water” section of Alvin Ailey’s “Revelations”; or Wendy Whelan in just about anything.
But sometimes you can tell right away when dance history is being made. It’s an ineffable, electrifying combination of the choreography, the music, the dancer and the time in which it all comes together. New York City Ballet principal Taylor Stanley’s solo set to “Gotta Have It,” by Jay-Z and Kanye West, early in Kyle Abraham’s “The Runaway,” is one of those moments.
